AFTA AI API License — Research Edition (SASR-L-R)

Non-commercial research license for using the AFTA AI APIs and Somali language models in academic, institutional, or exploratory settings.

01 Scope & grant of license

Under this Research Edition license (“License”), AFTA AI grants You a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access the AFTA AI APIs (including AFTA Voices, AFTA Lex, AFTA NLP, Embeddings, and Data Studio) solely for non-commercial research purposes.

You may:

  • Send text, audio, and related Input to the AFTA API.
  • Receive and analyze Outputs such as transcripts, TTS audio, embeddings, and lexical analyses.
  • Use Outputs for academic research, evaluation, benchmarking, and internal experiments.

This License does not grant You any rights to use the API for commercial products, production systems, revenue-generating services, or customer-facing applications.

02 Ownership

AFTA AI retains exclusive ownership of all models, datasets, corpora, lexicons, algorithms, infrastructure, and Outputs generated by the system.

  • You retain ownership of your Input (audio, text, metadata) submitted to the API.
  • You do not acquire ownership or derivative rights to AFTA AI’s models or training data.
  • This License does not transfer any intellectual property rights other than those explicitly stated.

03 Research-only restrictions

Under this Research Edition, You agree that You will not:

  • Use Outputs to train, fine-tune, or improve any ASR, TTS, LLM, embedding, or translation model.
  • Build or assist in building competing Somali language platforms (ASR, TTS, lexicon, embeddings).
  • Create or publish derived datasets composed primarily of AFTA AI Outputs.
  • Upload Outputs or derived corpora to public repositories (e.g. GitHub, HuggingFace, Kaggle).
  • Enable third parties to access the API or Outputs outside the approved research team.

Any commercial, production, or competitive usage requires a separate enterprise or commercial license with AFTA AI.

04 Data usage & privacy

AFTA AI processes Inputs and Outputs in accordance with its Privacy & Data Handling Policy.

  • By default, AFTA AI does not use customer Input to train public or shared models.
  • Inputs and Outputs may be logged for security, abuse prevention, and diagnostics.
  • Enterprise institutions may negotiate zero-retention, private API, or on-prem deployments.

You are responsible for ensuring that any personal data you submit has an appropriate legal basis and necessary approvals (e.g. ethics boards, institutional review).

05 Security & access control

You agree to:

  • Store API keys securely and avoid embedding them in public code or repositories.
  • Restrict access to authorized members of your research group or institution.
  • Implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect Inputs and Outputs.
  • Notify AFTA AI promptly of any suspected key compromise or misuse.

06 Attribution

If You publish results or academic work based on this License, You agree to acknowledge:

“This work makes use of AFTA AI — Somali Language Intelligence Platform, 2025 (https://aftaai.com).”

07 Term & termination

This License remains in effect while You hold a valid research API key and comply with its terms. AFTA AI may suspend or revoke access if:

  • You breach any condition of this License.
  • You use Outputs for unauthorized training or commercial activity.
  • You attempt to reverse engineer, extract, or replicate AFTA models.
  • You engage in harmful activity, abuse, or misuse of the API.

Upon termination, You must cease using the AFTA API and may be required to delete Outputs, cached data, and credentials obtained under this License.

08 Warranty & liability

The AFTA AI APIs and Outputs are provided “as is” without any warranty of accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any particular purpose.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, AFTA AI will not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages arising from or related to Your use of the API under this License.

09 Governing law

This Research Edition License is governed by the laws of England and Wales, unless otherwise agreed in writing between Your institution and AFTA AI.

10 Acceptance

By requesting or using a research API key, integrating AFTA AI into your research environment, or continuing to access the service, You confirm that You have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this AFTA AI API License — Research Edition.
